Why volunteer with Louisville Audubon

Volunteering with us offers you the opportunity to:

Learn

Gain a deeper understanding of conservation issues that impact birds and other wildlife

Connect

Interact with and meet many different people from all walks of life

Grow

Build new skills and knowledge while honing your existing skillset

Drive change

Make a difference in our community by helping us create a more sustainable future

We'll do our best to ensure you're:

  • Recognized for your efforts
  • Treated with respect
  • Provided with the necessary training to do your job effectively and well
  • Encouraged to voice concerns, issues, and new ideas

In return, we ask that you:

  • Support Louisville Audubon's mission, goals, policies, and procedures
  • Represent Louisville Audubon in a responsible and professional manner
  • Act ethically and with integrity; champion diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Bring a passion for conservation and a desire to take action
  • Are serious about your commitment to volunteering
  • Keep the lines of communication open at all times

Appointed Volunteer minimum requirements

  • Serve in your role for at least one consecutive year
  • Maintain active membership in the Louisville Audubon Society (or be willing to join if not currently a member)
  • Understand and stay up to date on our mission and programs, such as Lights Out Louisville
  • Have working knowledge of bird identification (aural and visual; field marks; habitats; behaviors; etc.)—but you don't need to be an expert!
  • Help support and/or lead LAS community-engagement activities—such as leading a bird walk or staffing a booth at a festival—at least once a quarter/four times a year (or more, if you can!)
    • We'll work with you to fit the events you support into your schedule and areas of interest—and we're happy to provide any training you might need!
  • Be willing to submit to a background check administered by the Kentucky State Police*
*Background checks are required for insurance purposes. However, a prior conviction or criminal record will not automatically exclude you from being selected as a volunteer.
